As long as it’s a direct dye, like pravana vivids, and not a color that is mixed with developer it’s completely safe. Back in the day that’s how I used to make pastel shades: got a big bowl of white conditioner and added color until the desired shade is achieved. In fact, that’s essentially what overtone is.

Temporary color depositing products such as Overtone does not employ such chemicals and are less damaging by nature.” That means the products are actually less damaging than traditional dyes, without being less effective.
Does overtone conditioner stain?
Whether oVertone will stain a bathroom surface really depends on how porous the material is and how often it’s wiped down. Our Extreme conditioners have way more pigment than our Vibrant or Pastel lines, so there’s less chance of permanent staining when using our Vibrant or Pastel conditioners.
Is overtone a direct dye?
In my opinion it’s an overpriced direct dye that they’re trying to play off as a conditioner. There’s also the issue about trying to lift it out of your hair. The last time I got my roots done at the salon (they have to be bleached out), I got some red banding from the Overtone.
